Just like many other
mom's out there, I like to stay on top of what my child eats and his overall
health. Part of doing so is making sure I read up on the latest news and AAP recommendations. One of the latest controversies
is the Apple Juice report. A few months back Dr. Oz reported that five
brands of apple juice (minute maid, apple & eve, mott's, juicy juice and gerber) all contained some level of arsenic and suggested that this was
a cause for concern.
Dr. Besser immediately responded on Good Morning America,
in which he said that Dr. Oz was irresponsible for making such a suggestion and
worry parents like us based on very brief testing. He also argued that the
results do not provide a breakdown of the levels of the two forms of arsenic --
organic and inorganic.
Now what did the FDA
have to say about this?..... Don Zink, PhD, senior science adviser in the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition,
wrote, "The FDA believes that it would be irresponsible and misleading
for The Dr. Oz Show to suggest that apple juice contains unsafe amounts of
arsenic based solely on tests for total arsenic." The FDA proceeded to say
that the organic form of arsenic is "essentially harmless". The
inorganic form can cause problems at high levels or with a long period of
exposure.
After further testing
and a Consumer Report investigation it has been found that Dr. Oz was right
after all!!!! It was proven that most of the arsenic that registered was inorganic
and the total arsenic levels were higher than what the FDA allows in water.

What do you think about having carcinogens in your child's food?
